4 all new in the shop! (we know, only 2 pictured here. you'll have to sneak into the shop to see the others) but if you want to visualize them first: fuchsia with cobalt? yes. soft pink with brass? got it. understated mustard with cream? check. a variation of one we've made before that we keep falling hard for (it's that surprising mix of that green + yellow/black stripe + brass)? it's there. but for who knows how long?

a note about shipping: we had to up the price just a tad for domestic orders because of the price increase for postage. poor united states postal service, we'll always love and support you.

we're understandably infatuated with objects that have an obvious "hand" in them. yeah, it's because we make things ourselves but more than that it's the visualization of someones process-love-time-care that we get hung up on each and every time. pair that with a living green thing and it's over for us.

we recently came across this tumblr site of mpeck and it's made us both ca ca crazy. daydreams of getting back in the pottery studio are rising, but we have no desire to "remake" these beauties- we couldn't even if we tried. there is something uniquely- messily-perfect- in each of these pieces that's just right.

this project is intriguing because of how consuming it is. from emily's brother, fritz, on his wikidiary:

"… and finally where it should be, after hours and hours and weeks and weeks of dyeing, cutting, braiding, and sewing every shred of unused blue (or willing to be blue) fabric and clothing in the house….and now that I have finally run out, it is done for the moment, possibly inspiring some upcoming projects, and provisionally placed exactly in the center of the dome, where it is looking so diminutive for such worn-out beat-up fingers."

given our choice we go for a real, tactile, visual inspiration board any day of the week----> but man, pinterest is doing its job. seeing these bits side by side taken from disparate places all over the web, gathered, collected, and "pined" all to one location= it's enough to make one very happy not to mention inspired. of the two of us, emily is the mastermind behind our dD pinterest page and being on both the inside and the outside of this- I (jen) can say, she-is-killen-it. I love to watch what she finds- you can follow along too right here.

we just added one shiny and bright double strand bracelet to the shop. does it really deserve it's own blog post? absolutely. ok ok it can share the spotlight- we've been busy filling shop orders! --- 4 to be exact. the one below was everything we made for the palace store, in portland, oregon. we're so happy to have our goods in what sounds/looks like a sweet spot.

jen has made me some remarkable gifts (knitted, sculpted, beaded, sewed...) but this one that she made for my birthday last week, has my full attention and adoration. it's a hand built ceramic vessel of sorts. she said it could function as a vase but i had my sights on making it a home for 2 little succulents. remind me to take a picture of e v e r y t h i n g she's ever made for me and remind me to call the post "ode to jen".

when we woke up this morning the first thing we did was check the ship & shape shop (in fact we we were up in the middle of the night and couldn't help but checkin at 2am). we were the first to drop off our goods last week to annika, erin, and maddy. excited by their always innovative styling and photography - not to mention all the pieces themselves, we kept checking their blog in the hopes of a sneak peak all week (yeah, we're a little impatient- we admit it). we're delighted to say that everyone made new things this time, sometimes working in totally new mediums and it's no surprise that everything is, again, lovely and beautifully crafted. we're lucky to be included among so many talented makers-

these are ghana borg baskets and we're crazy for them. with this many designs/colors/shapes it seems ones whole life could fit neatly inside. what a lovely organized life it would be too. the few we have in our homes now clean up and tuck toys/magazines/winter hats/yarn/laundry/anythingandeverything neatly in their place.

trying to describe the visual oasis that is Hunt & Gather (on Xerxes ave in south minneapolis) is a bit hard because it claims to be an antique shop but it's so much more. and to be honest, the outside does not announce itself as a place we want to visit (think tacky paint job, and not the good tacky) but once inside, we get lost in the wonderland that is a well edited and intricately displayed room after room after room of the most wonderful old and storied objects. let the pictures do the rest of the talking...

after a particularly long day of working in jen's old studio we took this photo with the last remaining photo in our polaroid camera. standing in the snow, having just worked for a few months on things we liked but had no idea how the world would respond to... we held our breath, snap, and lept. we'd been thinking about working on a project together for a while and after months of making, talking, dreaming, editing, conversing, making decisions about color and shapes and backgrounds and language- finally we launched out into the world: dullDiamond opened it's proverbial doors for business on January 1st, 2011. we had no idea what was in store. one whole year has passed and we're happy to say this is still our pleasure to be making these colorful bits for you all to enjoy (and of course for us too!)

so, on our one year anniversary tomorrow, we're opening again. all fresh and new pieces in the shop. check back then.

we are very intrigued by these substantial and attractive vessels. the "stacking vessels" (& stacking vessel soldiers) are a series of functional sculptures for the home. each one consisting of a wood top or bottom, blown glass middle and ceramic base or top. a snippet of pia's manifesto reads:

"My aim is to design objects to contain stories I perceive as relevant today: juxtapositions of materials, surfaces, textures, symbols and colours can unfold to tell new stories through objects, just as letters and words make up the stories in a book."

erin considine's process is as rich as the outcome of her practice. she carves the prototypes for her brass charms and clasps, she makes the dyes for the yarn, rope, and fibers which ultimately, she weaves into thoughtful jewels- each is preciously un-precious. be still my heart.

I just got one of these beauties- and it's even softer and harder and richer and stranger and bolder and more lovely in person than in photos. i don't think I'll be taking it off anytime soon.

we're fans (and that's an understatement). a while ago both of us were lucky enough to get our hands on one of these fantastically original necklaces. when the package arrived it was full of little and big pleasures- unwrapping the thoughtfully packaged envelope, a little bag made out of killer fabric to hold the goods, and ohhh the goods themselves. lets just say if we weren't already falling we're now straight up head over heals. thanks obj. & totem- for making something we've never seen before.

our heads need warmth in the form of a cheery pattern (can't decide between the ones above) and no one delivers that better than annie larson (who we sadly just said goodbye to as she moved from minneapolis to brooklyn). we were so bummed to read this the other day- even more reason to support her and others creating incredibly original and beautifully crafted work.

my most satisfying eating situation last week went down in greenpoint, brooklyn at a sweet spot named Eat – it was decked out with handmade pottery, minimum decoration/frills, warm service and a simple yet thoughtful menu. my friends went home with that that lovely trio up there (second from the bottom) and the potters (jordon colon & arla bascom) were even there to wrap up the goods and send us on our way. good eat.

hello! we're sneaking 1 new bracelet into the shop today. item #273- which means we're inching our way closer to making/selling our 300th made-by-our-hands-dD-item. whew. it's a nice little number with a little wood, some seed beads and a touch of neon yellow to boot.

oh man, what a day and a welcome change of pace from nyc. it felt like a giant deep breath -the sculptures were gigantic, the land was vast, and the air light and warm. the terrain around there reminded me of southern minnesota, felt right at home. i recommend a visit to storm king sculpture park if you ever find yourself in that area.

while i was in new york, i was lucky enough to pay a visit to my dear friend clare in her work/live studio in queens (actually, we were there for a perfect dinner party (ghost stories included) until the wee hours and i spontaneously sprang a studio visit on her. surprise!). i count clare among one of my favorite painters and i'm sure you can see why. view all her work here.

last week we posted via Simple Lovely about our favorites... and this weekend i revisited that list on my to dos: check and check. let me share my productivity in non-dD related projects (ohhh and we promise- there has been a lot in the works on the dD front and we'll give you the low done soon)

So-
1) re-potted quite possibly my very favorite plant: Baby Tears. sad name but this sweet dainty little bit will live through my negligence and still keep rocking all the splendor of indoor-lush-green.

2) boiled some water, took out a handful of bowls, mixed and poured dye- the result: some hot new colors for my little ones feet- he has declared the purple his favorite. I'd agree.

now that we're seeing these guys side by side, we're noticing they'd make a killer pair, but they are for sale separately. and no, those are not scary severed fingers up there. i'm trying to show you the amazing nail polish i made by mixing together neon orange with a coral red = it really does make the perfect color that this photo is not illustrating to the fullest! anyway, you can head over to the shop to check out the new ones.

the other day, we literally felt fall roll in and the curtain come down on summer. that day had been remarkably warm and sunny and that night, as if the earth was talking to the calendar, a cool crisp breeze ushered in our next season (and its been going back and forth ever since). i don't find fall the most inspiring of seasons, but cozy, yeah it's got that...and with that, we give you the most amazing of all apple recipes. we eat it morning, noon, and night. this recipe has traveled to friends and friends of friends of friends.

Puffy Oven Apple Pancake 

 (via a friend via an old betty crocker cookbook)

1 apple 

2 Tbsp. butter
2 large eggs
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup milk
1/4 tsp. salt

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees 2. melt butter in pie plate, brush butter over bottom and sides of pie plate 3. Sprinkle  2 Tbsp. brown sugar and 1/4 tsp. cinnamon evenly over melted butter 4.  Arrange 1 cup thinly sliced, peeled apples over sugar 5. Beat eggs lightly in bowl with whisk or hand mixer 6. Add remaining  ingredients and mix just until blended. Do not overmix! 7. Pour over  Apples 8. Bake 30-35 minutes 9. Immediately loosen sides and invert onto heatproof serving plate 10. smother with butter and maple syrup or agave.

(we've made this dairy free by substituting almond milk and earth balance for the butter. turns out equally amazing.)

it was about this time last year that we hatched this plan to open an online shop (but it took us 5 months to open it!). we knew we would fill it with beaded items and ceramics but the name came months later (jen on the way home from the farmers market "what about dullDiamond?" done and done). i don't think either of us knew how or what our collaboration would look like over time or if it would last- but from our point of view, this has been a very good year. we are thankful to you all for supporting our work and we're excited to see where dD lands next year this time...

we donated this set of bracelets to the silent auction portion of the The Celebration of Hope, a gala to benefit the Liz Logelin Foundation. it will be happening this friday september 16th in minneapolis. if you would like to make a tax deductible bid on these pieces they will be up on ebay beginning this saturday, september 17th, for 7 days.

for those you of unaware of this tremendous organization that supports widows with very young children, you can read more about it here. the foundation was founded by matt logelin (a friend of emily's husband), who lost his wife the day after the birth of their baby madeline. and if you're looking for a gripping and touching story about the fragility of life and the strength of humanity, pick up his inspiring book.

this is my equivalent to having a gold tooth. one glittery gold nail in a sea of poppy red. i like it. and that odd mug? it's easily my most favorite piece of pottery and every morning it holds my cappuccino. i found it at a thrift store for $.80. maker unknown.

over the weekend we visited the ladies of Ina Grau. it was a few hours of discussing their process of making, designing, and means of production. like us, this duo is made up of friends - Crystal Quinn and Luisa Fernanda Garcia-Gomez - and they're making everything themselves, but unlike us they're breaking new ground by making what seems un-makable...SHOES! over a year ago, they set out to teach themselves how shoes are crafted- by hand. they created patterns, and learned about sizing, materials, and construction all on their own. the product is a small line of shoes coming this fall, and can we say, WE CAN'T WAIT! they are not only beautifully made but mindfully crafted. we think they might just take over the world- and we're totally ok with that. check out progress on their website: Ina Grau
